Rodrigo Marques is an internationally recognised marimba artist, award-winning composer, and dedicated educator. He combines performance, composition, and teaching in a unique artistic identity.
Winner of several international prizes, including First Prize in both Performance and Composition at the Universal Marimba Competition in Belgium, Rodrigo has also received awards in Italy, Portugal, and Belgium for his creativity and originality.
He has performed as a soloist with orchestras such as the Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra (Korea) and the Opole Philharmonic (Poland), and has appeared at major festivals across Europe, Asia, and Australia. His tours have included solo recitals, chamber music, and collaborations with leading percussionists and ensembles.
As a composer, his works are performed worldwide, and many have been chosen as set pieces for international marimba competitions, including Permafrost Concert, Ulular del Tigre, Magic Sphere, Garden of Irises, and Rapsódia Portuguesa. Rodrigo continues to receive commissions for new works to be premiered at major festivals and competitions.
Rodrigo is also an active educator, giving masterclasses and workshops in Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, and beyond. He serves as Director of the Ludwig Albert International Marimba Academy, Composer-in-Residence of the Universal Marimba Competition, and has been a jury member in international competitions across Europe, Asia, and Australia.
His artistic vision combines tradition and innovation, encouraging improvisation, cross-disciplinary work, and the development of a personal artistic voice. Rodrigo’s goal is to inspire audiences and students alike through the marimba’s infinite colours and expressive power.
